R insulin

ReliOn Novolin R insulin.

ReliOn brand insulin is no longer made by Novo Nordisk, who had been responsible for producing the ReliOn insulins since 2000. [2][3] The ReliOn insulins are still offered in the same types, R, NPH, and 70/30 mix, but they are now produced by Eli Lilly and branded as Humulin/ReliOn insulins. [4][5][6] Novolin insulins have NOT been discontinued; these insulins are available as Novolin N, Novolin R, and Novolin 70/30. Only the ReliOn/Novolin branded insulins have been phased out.

The insulin was made by Novo Nordisk for Wal-Mart/Sam's Club under the ReliOn brand name. [7][8] It was the same insulin from the same manufacturer as Novolin R and Actrapid. [9][10][11][12]

The difference was in the price; the ReliOn branded insulins were cheaper in price but not in quality.

Like all R or neutral insulins, nothing is added (suspensions) to alter the insulin's action or speed. [13]

Other comparable insulins are Huminsulin Normal, Humulin R [14], Humulin S, [15][16][17] Insuman Rapid [18] and Winthrop Rapid, both by Aventis.

A short-acting, soluble, non-suspended insulin produced from r-DNA/GE/GM, bovine, or porcine sources. From 1921 to the 1930's when PZI was developed, R was the only kind of insulin available.

While both R/neutral and semilente insulins are considered fast-acting, they differ in a few ways. As above, there's no suspension or buffer [19] in R/neutral; it's totally dissolved and soluble, meaning it can safely be used intravenously. [20]

The very small insulin particles in semilente insulin are suspended by zinc. [21] Semilente is cloudy, has an acetate buffer and cannot be used intravenously.

R/Neutral insulin cannot be reliably mixed with Lente or Ultralente insulins. [22][23] Semilente can; the ratio of 3 parts semilente insulin to 7 parts ultralente insulin produces Lente insulin. [24]
