Long-acting insulins were up until recently, of one type: They were natural or r-DNA/GE/GM insulins that used protamine PZI or zinc Ultralente as the suspension, which slowed absorption of the insulin. There are newer insulin analogs such as Lantus and Levemir, which are specifically created to be long-lasting insulins.
